about

Here's a 3 part song with an overall theme. The main theme is something I learned a long time ago, the definition of insanity. I don't remember who said it to me first but I think it was my mom. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results". This phase accurately describes my approach to life for the past 20 or so years. I often felt a strange sense of deja vu and misinterpreted that as some deeper connection to the unseen forces of the universe and not just me repeating the same reckless behaviors over and over. Everything was everyone else's fault or the universe or God, not my own. I would be so willing to relinquish control to anyone or anything and it was a great scapegoat for self-seeking, self-destructive behavior. If I never really tried at anything, I could never be to blame if things didn't work out right? I'd be so busy analyzing my world, I couldn't even see it crashing down all around me. This song was my first step in admitting that maybe I was at least partially to blame for the state of my life. The second verse is about how it was easier for me to recognize my own flaws in someone else than it was in myself. How often times I chase after chaos and insanity because it's more familiar than happiness and serenity. The last verse is about how our society seems to continually repeat the same hateful and ignorant patterns over and over. "Those who do not learn from their own history are destined to repeat it". As a society, we latch onto these fears of things we don't understand through the media and misinterpretation of religion, etc. Hate takes less effort than education, fear is more visceral than tolerance. The powers that be would much rather spoon feed us ignorance than take the time to educate us. Whether it be race, religion, sex, sexuality, socioeconomic standing, etc. There will always be something to hate and fear, as long as there is Fox News, Donald Trump, rich and poor, borders, oil, and the military industrial complex. Let's not keep making these same mistakes over and over or we will all be just as insane as any addict.

lyrics

Make the same mistakes
Re-live a thousand yesterdays
Keep doing the wrong things and call it deja vu
Take the blame, pass the buck
Keep on pressing my bad luck
And give control to you

But what did I expect?
Court's adjourned before I could stand to object
It's like breaking down my world as it's crashing down on me

chorus
Victim of my own circumstance
Repeat mistakes at every chance

When you came back for more
I let you right back in my door
Insanity so comforting, it's all I've known
Play the game, you'll forget
Everything that you regret
Looks like your cover's blown

But what did you expect?
Court's adjourned before you could stand to object
It's like breaking down your world as it's crashing down on you

chorus
Victim of your own circumstance
Repeat mistakes at every chance

And once again we find
We're losing our collective minds
Ignoring past mistakes, continue playing roles
Wag the dog, ring the bell
Keep us happy in our cells
And let them take control

But what did we expect?
Court's adjourned before we could stand to object
It's like breaking down our world as it's crashing down on us

chorus
Victim of our own circumstance
Repeat the past at every chance
